Photos and videos of this parade in Germany have been making the social media rounds in recent days.
The imagery here is not subtle: Trump mocked in sexual terms and equated with Putin.
But we’ve seen this movie before:
The Germans made similar satires about FDR, and tried to equate him with Stalin. The exact metaphors were different, but the tone was much the same.
Which brings us to the larger trend line:
- In my grandfather’s time, the Germans were rabid nationalists, attempting to take over Europe.
- In the 1980s, the West Germans were peaceniks, calling Reagan a warmonger for opposing the Soviets.
- Today, they’re calling Trump a Kremlin stooge because he doesn’t want to start World War III over the conflict in Ukraine.
You simply can’t win with these folks.
