The death of the cigarette vending machine

Cigarette vending machines were everywhere when I was young. Now they are more or less gone.

I’m no fan of the tobacco industry or cigarette smoking. I lost a grandmother, a cousin by marriage, and a high school classmate to lung cancer. They were all smokers.

What I notice, though, is that even as we have turned cigarette smoking into the social equivalent of leprosy, there has been a widespread and corresponding move toward the promotion of marijuana as an industry, with a weed dispenser on every corner.

So we’re trading one bad habit for another? I’m not sure that’s progress.
