I’ve noticed that science fiction author Tobias Roote is now selling both ebooks and audiobooks directly from his website.
For most authors, the technology is still too cumbersome for this to be done cheaply and easily, while preserving a seamless user experience.
Publishing a book to Amazon therefore remains the default choice for most authors, and I expect this to be the case for quite some time.
Long-term, though, the direct sales trend will continue.
This doesn’t mean that Amazon will cease to be relevant. There will always be a role for market aggregators.
But we may see the day when direct author sales offset the Big A’s near monopoly power in the online book space.
Imagine if Stephen King and John Grisham were selling books directly from their websites.
That, I assure you, would be a real market disruptor.
